Welcome!

It has been some time since the last post update. Once again I would like to welcome new visitors to this site as well as those returning to update themselves on recently added material. I would also like to welcome those students of the game using this site as a resource for their studies.

For new and returning visitors, presented below on this Home page you will find an advert for the new The Mahjong Collector magazine. This is aimed at the collectors of Mahjong tile sets as well as those interested in the development of the game and anyone wishing to learn more about tile sets in general.

Also, a recently updated article has been added to this site. Titled China to the West, it charts how a popular Chinese tile game caught the attention of three Westerners – Joseph Babcock, Albert Hager and Anton Lethin – who then promoted it to Western players in China and eventually to countries outside of China. The update features a letter written by Anton Lethin that sheds light on the train of events that led to the formation of The Mah-Jongg Company of China, and its sister company, The Mah-Jongg Sales Co of San Francisco that became synonymous with the game in the United States. Also featured are new photographs of the three individuals and their families.

New tile sets have been added to the Tile Set Galleries section. These primarily involve tile sets sourced in Japan ( tile sets 47, 48 and 49) but also a couple collected in the United Kingdom and the United States (tile sets 51 – 72). These additions are found in the Gallery 2.0, Bone and Bamboo section.

A recently acquired má què pái/Mahjong and money-suited card game deck (the deck is used for both games) has also been added to the Money-Suited Cards section (Three Suits 29 circa 1990).
