Greetings to extra visitors, from the last update, from Argentina, Belgium, Chile, Peru and Vietnam.
More bone and bamboo sets have been added to the Bone and Bamboo Gallery in Section 2.0. These again herald from probably the 1950s to the 1970s. However, it is not certain whether some may have made their appearance as early as the 1930s/40s. These sets come in flat, slide-top wooden boxes. They are sometimes called ‘Ladies Sets’ or ‘Travel Sets’ but there is no evidence that either was their purpose, since all Mahjong containers could be transported or have been played by either gender. Perhaps some evidence may come to light to suggest otherwise.
Also, more Synthetic sets are now being added to the Synthetic Gallery in Section 2.0. These sets are hand carved and feature 8 and 16 Flowers tiles illustrating various themes such as War and Chinese Legends for example. Captions will be added in due course.
